On almost every project we take on, someone asks the same question at some point: aren't shop drawings and construction drawings basically the same thing? They come from the same design intent and often look similar at first glance, but the level of detail — and who actually uses each set on site — is very different.
What Are Construction Drawings?
Construction drawings are prepared by the architect or structural engineer to communicate design intent, layout, dimensions and code compliance.
What Are Shop Drawings?
Shop drawings take that design intent and translate it into fabrication-ready instructions, including dimensions, materials, hardware, tolerances and assembly sequence.
